Common Five-Lined Skink

In Canada, the Common Five-lined Skink is limited to two distinct areas. The Carolinian population, which includes the OAC, can be found under woody debris in clearings with sand dunes, open forested areas, and wetlands.
- This skink is Ontario’s only lizard
- When threatened by a predator, a skink’s tail can autotomize or spontaneously break off and thrash for several minutes. This serves to distract the predator so the skink can escape. The tail is able to grow back at a rate of about 6mm a week.
